THE BIRKS ABERFELDY
CLIENT: THE BIRKS ABERFELDY
The Birks Cinema in Aberfeldy was purpose-built in 1939, and provided local access to film for the town until it was converted into an amusement hall in the 1980s, which in turn closed in 2004.
When the building went up for sale the local community started a long round of feasibility studies and grant applications to bring it back into use as a cinema.
After raising the required funds and recognising the need for a specialist in cinema for the auditorium, the Friends of the Birks commissioned Burrell Foley Fischer to provide cinema design consultancy services and to develop a concept for the interior. A woodland theme was used, taking as its inspiration the Birks (the Birch trees) of Aberfeldy. The cinema was officially opened by its patron, the actor and former Aberfeldy resident Alan Cumming.
