Principal

After studying at Birmingham School of Architecture, Aidan’s early career included ten years at Hickton Madeley Architects where he gained experience in the design and delivery of a range of projects for clients as diverse as theatres, conference facilities, and medical centres.

Aidan has a particular passion for the design of spaces for teaching, learning and research, a philosophy running through a series of projects from schools to universities and research institutions. At Broadway Malyan he led their education team, winning a number of prestigious design competitions for schools, colleges and universities in the UK and overseas. He teaches at several universities in the UK and is active in an ongoing programme of research, notably into the effectiveness of learning spaces in higher education. At BFF Aidan has led projects for Coventry University, Trinity College Dublin and designed the award winning new Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre, DARTeC, for Cranfield University.

On the RIBA’s Conservation Register and one of the UK’s leading designers specialising in sensitive and historic environments, Aidan excels in the strategic re-imagining of historic buildings particularly in a commercial context for the 21st century. His leadership, energy and passion have proven critical in the delivery of many successful projects inspiring both his team and client as well as informing his key skills in community and stakeholder liaison. Aidan’s recent and current projects include the reimagining of the Grade II* Hall for Cornwall, winner of “Best Project” at the 2023 RTPI South West Awards for Planning Excellence, and new Creative Hubs at the Grade I York Guildhall and Grade II Former Magistrates Court in Kidderminster.

Aidan has an additional specialism, designing in Equestrian Environments, which has included working with the Jockey Club. His extensive experience of working in the sector, includes Masterplanning the next phase of the redevelopment of York Racecourse, working at Ascot and Newmarket, and designing Racecourses overseas including the Rashid Equestrian & Horseracing Club in Bahrain. In recent years Aidan has increasingly immersed himself in the world of horse racing including visiting a number of the world’s leading racecourses and developing the specialist knowledge base required to work in the sector and to design in an equestrian context.
